What role do wax-based additives play in the PVC extrusion molding process?

In the efficient yet complex process of PVC extrusion molding, the balance of the lubrication system is crucial to success. Among them, wax additives play an indispensable role, and their core function can be summarized as: regulating melt rheological behavior to ensure smooth production and product quality.

Specifically, wax-based additives function primarily through two mechanisms:

  • External lubrication : Represented by polyethylene wax. At processing temperatures, these melt and migrate between the PVC melt and the metal surfaces of the screw and barrel, forming a lubricating film. This significantly reduces friction and adhesion, decreases equipment wear and torque, prevents material degradation, and achieves stable extrusion and smooth demolding.

  • Internal lubrication : Waxes with stronger polarity, such as oxidized polyethylene wax, can partially compatibility with the PVC melt, reducing melt viscosity and promoting sliding between macromolecular chains. This improves the uniformity of material flow, helps fill complex molds, and reduces the risk of decomposition due to overheating.

By precisely combining waxes with different melting points and polarities, the "plasticization-lubrication" balance of PVC materials can be finely adjusted. The ultimate results are: increased production line speed, reduced energy consumption, improved surface gloss and density of products, and reduced defects such as precipitation.

Therefore, selecting a suitable wax lubrication system is one of the core technical aspects of achieving efficient and stable PVC extrusion and obtaining high-quality profiles and pipes.
